September 27, 2020

It’s hard to believe we are heading into October this week. The weather has been beautiful, and we are thankful for those mask breaks we can take outside in the fresh air.

Speaking of October, the Fall Party is scheduled for Friday, October 30. For safety reasons, I’m so sad we cannot invite parents in to help out with the party. Seeing parents at the parties was always a nice time to talk casually and watch the students have fun. I believe Alward will still have the costume parade, and the fourth grade teachers want to have a party if you can help us out. Please sign up using this link. Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

Academics:

Math – The last quiz of the unit was taken Friday. Many students did very well. Those who are struggling, I will be meeting with in small groups. The unit test review (practice test) will be taken next Wednesday. This test will then be corrected and used for studying for the final test. Those who study the test review always make a remarkable improvement on the final test. Please watch for this test review to come home in order to go over it with your student next weekend.

Writing – Revising and finalizing our realistic fiction stories this week.

Reading – Analyzing and interpreting characters. Small group meetings to work on reading skills.

Technology – Continuing to work on math facts and beginning Study Island.

Wellness – Focusing on being positive

Building our pizzas with math facts. Keep practicing at home with flashcards or Xtra Math website.

Have a good week!

September 20, 2020

We had an outdoor assembly this week to kick off the “SOAR” Champion tokens — Safety, Owning your behavior, Acting responsibly, and showing Respect. I’m hoping I have many Alward champions in my classroom this year.

Academics this week:

Math – Subtracting large numbers and borrowing. See the paper coming home explaining the process that is taught. Pictures are showing a math game where multiplication, adding, and subtracting are used to win.

Writing – Finishing our rough drafts and learning to revise. Here we are acting out our writing to test whether there is enough detail for our peers to act the scene. Many did a great job.

Technology – Xtra math progress with multiplication facts. Some students need to work at home to catch up. Flash cards are also a good option if no technology is available.

Wellness – Lessons reviewed about hand washing and mask use. Discussing gratitude this week. “Brain break” shown below:

This will be our first full week. Make it a good one!

September 13, 2020

We are getting use to our masks, but it is not easy — and some days it becomes a little warm.  Overall, I’m proud of the students for adjusting and remembering to wash their hands. We take a mask break in the morning and in the afternoon (at recess). This is our morning mask break outside on a sunny day while we are eating our snacks.

We drew a picture of our face with a mask (paper folded), and unfolded reveals the type of person we are. Some examples: happy, nice, positive, kind, silly, sweet, funny, wonderful, fun, respectful, careful, smart.

Watch for these to come home soon.

Academics:

Math – On our first quiz the students did amazing! Next week — adding four digit numbers. Memorizing multiplication math facts are very important in fourth grade. Students must know their facts through the 12’s. Practice Xtra Math at home or use flash cards.

Writing – Creating a “story arc” to organize our realistic fiction story, and we’ll work on “showing” our story with details rather than just telling a summary.

Reading – Interpreting characters and using our read aloud Tiger Rising as an example.

Wellness – We created a “tool box” of emotional, mental, and physical ideas for staying healthy.

Technology – STAR math and reading tests are complete. These are complex tools for analyzing strengths and weakness for our students to drive my instruction and provide data for the school. These tests are given monthly.

Have a good week.

September 6, 2020

The students had a great week with Mrs. Foy. She expressed often what I nice class I had this year. I am always thrilled to hear that from a substitute teacher. I am very proud of the students and can’t wait to have full days with them.

Math – We are well into the unit on number place values and will be working up to a million this week. Homework may come home if your student doesn’t finish in class. Many did a great job completing their homework by the next morning each day.

Writing – We are brainstorming ideas for a realistic fiction story. This week we will choose an idea and start developing our characters and setting. This is often a favorite writing unit, because students can use their creativity.

Reading – I will be testing reading levels next week Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to be sure we are choosing “just right” books. What I learn from the students, will also give me ideas for instruction. Our read aloud is Tiger Rising, a realist fiction story focusing on interesting characters and their traits, which will help us with our writing (I hope).  ( :

Technology – Computer testing with “STAR” in math and reading has been our focus. This is an incredible program for identifying strengths and weaknesses in students and providing data for my instruction and the school.

Wellness – Our main focus right now is being safe and following all the new COVID protocols. So far so good!

Have a wonderful Labor Day!
